Scientists estimate that there are about 3,000 different species of mosquitoes in the world. You may be surprised to learn that the majority of them do not bite people (although sometimes it seems like it!!). Some prefer large mammals, others feed on birds. There are even some that feed exclusively on reptiles and amphibians. One of the great things about scientific research is that there are always new, sometimes bizarre things to learn and study. A report from Communications Biology dated July 12, 2018, reveals that one species of mosquito, Uranotaenia sapphirina, actually feeds on, get this, earthworms and leeches! Are you kidding me? This is the first evidence of a mosquito that feeds on a non-vertebrate host. What’s more, a close relative of this mosquito feeds on frogs, and is attracted to them by the songs of the frogs. Wow! The study of bugs is filled with lots of interesting stories, amazing adaptations, and marvelous examples of evolutionary biology. Bugs have been upon this earth As long as we have known; Controlling them takes skill and work, An integrated zone!
