The #1 Mistake With Beetle
Traps, And How to Avoid It
University research confirms: traps placed too close to the plants you're protecting can attract more beetles than they catch. Placement is everything.
30+ Feet From Your Plants
Place the trap at least 30 feet, ideally 50+, from the roses, trees, or vegetables you're protecting. Beetles flying toward the lure won't reach your plants.
Position Downwind
Place the trap so prevailing winds carry the lure scent toward the main beetle entry direction, not back toward your garden. Check wind direction in the morning before deploying.
Match Plant Canopy Height
Hang or stake the trap at approximately the same height as the plants being protected, beetles fly at foliage level, not ground level.
Full Sun Location
Japanese beetles are most active in warm, sunny conditions. A trap in full sun intercepts beetles during their peak activity window, especially between 10am and 3pm.
Deploy Before Beetles Arrive
Install your trap 1-2 weeks before beetle season begins in your USDA zone. Lures take time to diffuse, an established trap is 3x more effective than one placed mid-infestation.

First Emergence
Beetles begin emerging from the soil in the South and Midwest. First wave arrives. Check and replace bags every 5-7 days.
Peak Infestation
Highest beetle activity nationwide. Replace bags every 3-5 days. Refresh lures mid-month. Maximum protection required.
Late Season Wind-Down
Activity slows from mid-August onward. Keep traps deployed through the month to capture the tail-end population before they lay eggs.

Pick Your Spot
Find a place 30-50 feet away from the plants you want to protect, somewhere sunny and open. This is the most important part - don't skip it.
Put the Lures In
Slide both lure cartridges into the holders on the vane. You need both in at the same time - that's what makes it work so well.
Hang It Up
Clip the bag onto the bottom of the vane, then hang the whole thing at about the same height as your plants. That's it - you're set up.
Check It Every Few Days
During peak season in July, the bag can fill up fast - check every 3-5 days. When it's full, just swap it out. No need to open it.
Swap the Lures Monthly
Replace the lure cartridges once a month while beetles are active. Old lures lose their scent and stop working - fresh ones make all the difference.
